Aloha,
I am having my property staked. Can you reffer me to an excavator. Is there other options? How much does it cost for a driveway and a house pad.

I don't have any personal recommendations, but here is a list of possible people I found online. I don't know if these numbers are still active/correct. If I should make any changes, post a reply and I'll change it. I know that Paul Andrade works in Eden Roc, they recently bulldozed a lot new my land on Road 11. I don't know what the current rates are going for, probably somewhere from $125 to $300 per hour). Anyone have specific rates for these contractors?

Perhaps we should expand the Links page on the main site to have multiple categories of links (maybe on seperate pages)? Or should we just put the links in the forum? Thoughts anyone?

Re: Trail cutting / Pin Finding/ bulldozing

Aloha,
Please be careful when choosing a bulldozing contractor. Some bulldoze the whole lot, "pin to pin", regardless of what you want or tell them. They then charge for all the hours doing that. Others make a mess, that needs to be redone.

The people down the street from me hired a contractor, and asked the dozer guy, and contractor to leave forest at the front of the lot. When she arrived at 8 am, at the lot, on the starting day, they'd already dozed from the street edge, to (just over onto the neighbor's) property line, and were moving inward. She was really upset, but there was nothing she could do... some people (or dozer operators) make it look like Arizona -- which really makes the neighbors mad. It also makes for a hot, dry, black lava home environment, and expensive landscaping to try to replace some of the greenery. Choose a bulldozing contractor wisely.

I've used Chris Galacgac, Bulldozing by the Day, 969-7937, a number of times, and been very happy with his work. Friends of mine have used him, and I've also seen other work he's done, both in Eden Roc and Fern Forest. I've seen probably at least 8 lots he's done. He normally makes a nice curving driveway, maintaining some forest at the front of the lot for privacy, he doesn't bulldoze in the setbacks on the sides, and he makes a very level housepad for building. He likes to talk with the owner, look at and discuss the lot, and be sure he dozes where the homeowner wants. He likes it when you mark clearly where you want the work done, as well as the property lines. He's fixed bulldozing that others have messed up. He's reasonable, efficient, and does some of the best bulldozing work I've seen. He's a good guy, too. His business card lists an email for him, it's Bulldozing@hawaii.rr.com, and his address is 57 Kahema Street, Hilo, HI 96720.

Please leave some forest- especially at the front and sides of your lot, for the native birds (I saw a pair of Hawaiian Owl, Puueo, the other day), and for our rainforest flora and fauna, as well as for good neighborly relations.

Hope that helps. Also, if you need someone to do a cesspool, Rick Seaver in Eden Roc does excellent, amazing quality backhoe/ramhoe work.

aloha,
Janis

Aloha,
Thank you for all the information! It really helped, I can't wait to excavate. I am stocking up on wood to build a shed for storage. Just waiting on the daftsman to finish the plans. Then on to the next step! I have a lot on Ohelo Street. I will keep in touch! Hows the internet service there? Is high speed internet service out there? Or, is it dial-up? Either way I gotta have it.
