Mountain View Gym Playground

Post by radiopeg »

Subject: Mt. View Gym Meeting - Monday 1/23 at 5pm

Aloha All,

We will be having a “Friends of the Mountain View Gym” planning meeting this Monday 1/23 at 5 pm at the Mountain View Gym.

The exciting news is that we have been contacted by Kaboom about the possibility of building a playground on the Mt. View Gym property. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Kaboom, they help communities fund and build playgrounds. This is a great opportunity for Mt. View. But we need the community to be involved to make this happen.

Please join us on Monday 1/23 to find get more information about Kaboom and what you can do to help us continue to make the Mt. View Gym a thriving community center.

Paul

From Claudia Ziroli who was there. Wouldn't this be a great addition to life in our area?
Aloha ka kou!

There was a very exciting meeting at the Mountain View Gym yesterday evening!
There, we met with members of The Neighborhood Place of Puna, Hawai`i County Parks and Recreation,
Wai Ola School, Queen Liliuokalani Children's Trust, Brittany Smart's office, and a number of members from PCDP
(Puna Community Development Plan) and the PCDP Action Committee as well as members from a number of
upper Puna subdivisions and Mountain View Village.

We were all there to discuss the very real probability that we could have a state of the art, new playground built, with
a major portion of the cost borne by a 'benefactor'! Estimated costs for the playground is a staggering $200,000.00
-with only $8500.00 required from the community in terms of site prep and foundation work.
All or most of this money can and will come from grants and money available from Community resources.
The meeting was a presentation and discussion of the proposal from KaBoom - a playground supplier.
They had heard in the news about the Community support around the rennovations of the gym and had contacted
NPOP to see if we were interested in getting a playground. NPOP will be the lead community organization to get
the playground project rolling -but they need our help.

A Committee was formed to work with Hawai`i County Parks and Recreation to establish a non-profit
'Friends Of Mountain View Park' who will work with NPOP and Parks and Recreation to move the project
through to completion and thereafter. The next meeting will be Monday, March 5th at 5:00 at the gym.
Please come to the meeting and support and participate in this exciting project for our community!

Now, here's our part... NPOP will be submitting a request to KaBoom this next week and is seeking support letters from the community,
indicating that we want a playground.

If you could, please take a few moments to send a letter of support to Paul Normann, Executive Director of The Neighborhood Place of Puna.
It can be a simple letter indicationg your support for a playground at the gym. Paul's e-mail is: paul@neighborhoodplaceofpuna.org
Could you write a quick letter right now and send it on to Paul? The proposal is going out this week!

Mahalo nui loa!

And for those who missed the meeting, here are some questions and answers. Thanks, Claudia

1) Where will the proposed playground be located? IN AN AREA IN FRONT OF THE KUPUNA CENTER, NEAR THE RESTROOMS
2) Who will maintain the playground after it is built? PARKS AND REC AND THE FRIENDS GROUP BEING FORMED TO MALAMA THE PLAYGROUND
3) Do you think we will have any trouble with having to "police" the playground to make sure that there are not illegal activities going on, or dumping of trash, vehicles, etc? NOT MORE THAN WE HAVE NOW. THE PARK WILL BE USED BY THE WAI OLA STUDENTS AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY. THE SCHOOL HAS SATURDAY SESSIONS THERE AND SO, SCHOOL PERSONNEL WELL BE IN EYESIGHT OF THE PARK MOST DAYS... WE ALSO PLAN FOR A FENCE AROUND THE PLAYGROUND, AND I AM SURE THE POLICE WILL BE WILLING TO SWINGBTHRU THE PARK ON THEIR DRIVES UP AND DOWN HILL- IF THEY DON'T ALREADY DO SO!
4) Would FACA own the playground land? OH NO... IT IS COUNTY LAND. THEY HAVE ALL OF THE LIABILITY
5) What about liability in case of accident? ABOVE...
